To host a Buckingham Palace cocktail party Tuesday night for U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders, Queen Elizabeth turned to her hardworking daughter, Anne, and her reliable granddaughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, to help out with making everyone feel welcome at the diplomatically sensitive event.
Certainly, the two women did their best. But there were bound to be awkward moments, given that the star guest of the reception, ahead of the NATO summit in London, was America’s controversial, combative president.

No photos emerged of Kate enjoying handshakes or cocktail party small talk with either Trump or his wife. It’s not even known if the duchess greeted the president and first lady — or if she avoided contact with them altogether. Kate, whose husband Prince William is second in line to the throne, also happened to avoid being in a photo-op with Trump when he and his family attended a state dinner at Buckingham Palace in June.
As for Anne’s awkward moments, the first had people wondering …
