Town Crier: Death Festival to hit Bay Area just in time for Halloween

Death — it’s not the most comfortable topic, unless you’re talking about the Death Festival, taking place Oct. 24 through Nov. 3 in Oakland and around the bay. Just in time for Halloween and the Day of the Dead, the festival focuses on things like making a bucket list before you kick the bucket.

“We are all going to die,” says Brad Wolfe, the founder of the host organization Reimagine End of Life. “And our inevitable demise is not only scary to think about, it’s also taboo to talk about.” But he hastens to add that we should regularly reflect on why we’re here, “preparing for a time when we won’t be.”

And preparation can be fun. The Death Festival uses comedy, concerts, movies, art, interactive workshops and more to look at the last act of life. As they say “nobody gets off the planet alive.” For a full list of the 150-plus festival events, many of them free, see letsreimagine.org.

Around town: There’s no word yet on when Alcalá is supposed to open in the F&M Bank building at 2084 Mountain Blvd. in Montclair. Alcalá is the sister restaurant to the popular La Marcha Tapas Bar on San Pablo Avenue in Berkeley. The name means “citadel” in Arabic and the new restaurant’s décor will be rustic with a castle-like feel.

Speaking of restaurants, I mentioned last month that the venerable Doña Tomás is closing its longtime Telegraph Ave. location Nov. 24. The new venture, called simply Doña, is slated to open in mid-December in Chow’s former location at 3770 Piedmont Ave. And there are ownership changes at Thornhill Nursery (bought by Broadway Terrace Nursery)
