Madcap comedy ‘Play That Goes Wrong’ lands in SF for short run

Why is that theater people love to stage shows about just how bad plays can get?

Farces such as “Noises Off” and “Lend Me a Tenor” have delighted fans for years with behind-the-scenes looks at stage productions that are doomed by performers’ shortcomings and personal issues. Now comes “The Play That Goes Wrong,” a 2015 comedy by London’s Mischief Theatre Company about a stage show that falls apart — literally, and right in front of your eyes.

The show has been a hit with extended runs in London and New York, rave reviews from all over and an Olivier Award in 2015 for best new comedy. Now bad for a show that was first performed in a fringe theater in London for a total of four people.

So, yeah, pretty much everything has gone right for “The Play That Goes Wrong.” The only downside is its Bay Area premiere is a short six-day run, so get tickets while you can.

Details: Aug. 13-18; SHN Golden Gate Theatre, San Francisco; $40-$150; www.shnsf.com.
