Colorado’s craft beer industry isn’t pint-sized. Find out where it rates compared to other states.

Bottoms up, Colorado. A recent study found Colorado is the third largest producer of craft beer in the country, making 1,522,834 barrels of suds annually.

This is beer country, so that the Centennial State is a top producer of craft brews isn’t a surprise. Nor is California’s standing at No. 2, making 3,421,295 barrels a year.

But for anyone who tips back a Budweiser now and then but isn’t a connoisseur of craft beer, it may be eye-opening that Pennsylvania is the No. 1 state for small brewers, making 3,719,475 barrels a year.

The study looked specifically at craft beer, which is produced by a brewery that is small (an annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less) and independent (less than 25 percent of the brewery is owned or controlled by a beverage alcohol industry member that is not itself a craft brewer).

Based on the number of barrels of craft beer each state produces, the study also calculated how many 12-ounce cans or bottles of craft beer each state produces, because that’s how most beer is consumed. Colorado’s annual barrels of craft beer production translates to 503,550,443 cans, while California’s comes out to 1,131,308,213 cans and Pennsylvania’s is 1,229,906,400 cans.

Additionally, the study explored how many gallons of craft beer each state produces annually per each adult over the age of 21 who lives in that state. Pennsylvania, California and Colorado again made up the top three. Colorado and California produced 12.5 gallons per adult aged 21 and over, but they were substantially outpaced by Pennsylvania’s 21.3 gallons.
