“I was a teacher with the Oakland Unified School District and then a teacher with Pacifica Academy,” the Plaintiff explained in the complaint filed on March 13, 2019. “I always taught my students that study and hard work was the best way to get into a good college. I always taught my students to be honest and forthright and that cheating was wrong.”

She claimed she raised her son Joshua alone since he was two-and-a-half-years old, making sacrifices so he would get into a good college.
She praised her son for graduating with a 4.2 grade point average. She claimed her son was rejected from some of the colleges involved in the scandal.
“Joshua and I believed that he’d had a fair chance just like all the other applicants but did not make the cut for some undisclosed reason,” Toy wrote. “I’m now aware of the massive cheating scandal wherein wealthy people conspired with people in positions of power and authority at colleges in order to allow their children to gain access to the very colleges that Joshua was rejected from.”
Toy called the actions “heinous” and “despicable.”
“I’m now outraged and hurt because I feel that my son, my only child, was denied access to a college not because he failed to work and study hard enough, but because wealthy individuals felt that it was ok to lie, cheat, steal and bribe their children’s way into a good college,” the complaint claimed. “Plaintiffs simply wanted a fair chance for themselves or their children to go to a good college and that opportunity for a fair chance was stolen by the actions of Defendants.”
