Ocasio-Cortez Is Accused of ‘Hypocrisy’ for Failing to Provide Compensation Coverage to Staffers

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has branded herself as a progressive working-class champion who is fighting against the political Establishment and big business — someone unafraid and bold enough to even take on members of her own party as she sees fit.

But a report from the New York Daily News on Thursday revealed something else: New York officials have fined the Democratic socialist Ocasio-Cortez for failing to carry her campaign workers’ compensation coverage for a month in 2018.

“The employer did not have the required workers’ compensation coverage from March 31, 2018, to April 30, 2018, and was issued a final penalty of $1,500, which was paid,” New York’s Workers Compensation Board spokeswoman Melissa Stewart said of the Ocasio-Cortez campaign, according to the Daily News.

“This coverage is vital to ensuring workers are protected for on-the-job injuries.”

New York GOP spokeswoman Jessica Proud told the Daily News that the Ocasio-Cortez campaign’s payment omission represented “hypocrisy at its finest.”

“The so-called champion of workers, when given her own responsibility, is not following the law. It’s unbelievable,” said Proud.

The Daily News also spoke with an unnamed Democratic campaign expert who said compensating workers “is basic stuff, especially if you hold yourself out to be the champion of workers.”

Because Ocasio-Cortez claimed to be that champion and campaigned on that platform, this is “not a great look” for her at all, the unnamed Democratic strategist warned.

During an interview that aired last Sunday on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” CNN anchor and CBS correspondent Anderson Cooper asked Ocasio-Cortez about her efforts to eliminate “the influence of corporate money in politics.” He noted that the young lawmaker has “angered some of her colleagues in the House by encouraging primary challenges of Democrats who accept corporate money or oppose progressive policies.”

“These are politically dangerous tactics that you’re using,” Cooper warned.

Ocasio-Cortez replied, “It’s absolutely risky. It requires risk to try something new, but also we — we know so much of — of what we’ve tried in the past hasn’t worked, either.”

Ocasio-Cortez became a progressive star last summer after she pulled off a stunning upset primary victory against 10-term former Rep. Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.), former chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

She easily won the general election in the November midterms. Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and has already been butting heads with her Democratic congressional peers.

Another unfavorable news flash struck Ocasio-Cortez on Friday when Politico published a report called,
