Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Friday, Oct. 12.
If you can’t get enough pop culture, you’re probably going to want to get down to Fan Expo this weekend at the Vancouver Convention Centre. (Truthfully, if you’re a real sucker for pop culture, you’ve probably already heard about this event, but I digress.) At Fan Expo, you can get an autograph or a photo with your favourite guest, and there are plenty to choose from, including Superman himself Brandon Routh. You can take in the celebrity panels. You can watch professional comic artists battle in Sketch Duels, attend How To workshops, or just check out the rows and rows of vendors. And if you can’t make it Friday evening, fret not: Fan Expo runs all weekend.
Where: Vancouver Convention Centre West, 999 Canada Place Pl, Vancouver
When: 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Cost: $30 and up
YouTube Music Night Market
Youtube: it’s not just for makeup tutorials and right-wing conspiracies anymore. They’re in the music business, and to prove it, they’re staging a pop-up, musical night market in downtown Vancouver this Friday. At this special event, you can explore Vancouver’s local music scene and music purveyors, enjoy food and drink, take in a special live performance by Allie X, plus DJ D. Dee, DJ Express, Wabi, RUTS and DJ XTine. Plus it’s free! All you have to do to gain entrance to the event, located in Gastown, is download the YouTube music app on your phone.
Where: 555 W. Cordova St., Gastown, Vancouver
When: 7 – 11 p.m.
Cost: FREE (so long as you download that app)
VSO: ’80s Celebration
Hey, remember the 80s? The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra does, and they want to jog your memory Friday night with their 80s celebration at The Orpheum. You’ll hear a fully arranged version of Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go. They’re doing Huey Lewis and the News. There are songs by Michael Jackson, Tears for Fears, and even a couple of famous John Williams soundtracks. The whole thing sounds bonkers, and a ton of fun. Don’t miss out.
Where: Orpheum Theatre, 601 Smithe St., Vancouver
When: 8 p.m.
Cost: $23 and up
