Seven things to do in the Lower Mainland, July 13 to 19: Czech animation, Iron Mountain Music Festival, more

The Puppet Master: The Films of Jiří Trnka

When: July 19 — Aug 2, various times

Where: The Cinematheque, 1131 Howe

Tickets and info:

Jiří Trnka began working with animated puppets in 1946. The Czech puppet-maker, animator and film director has been called the “Walt Disney of Eastern Europe” for his contributions to animation, although you won’t find many smiling, singing animals or people in Trnka’s work. His greatest work The Hand, also his last film, is a chilling indictment of the increasingly draconian measures taken by the Communist state against free expression in arts. Even though it was made in 1965, it seems to predict the misery of the Prague Spring to come in 1968. This retrospective of some of his greatest works includes the Hand, his debut The Czech Year, the Emperor’s Nightingale and his wacky anti-Nazi gem Springman and the SS. To really appreciate them, you need to see these works on a big screen.
