Renee Zellweger and Liza Minnelli have taken a genuine liking to each other, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively, now that Zellweger is playing her mom in the upcoming Judy Garland biopic.
“They’ve quietly bonded and become the best of friends,” an insider told Radar, adding that Zellweger was actually the one who reached out to Minnelli. “She wanted Liza’s blessing before she committed to ‘Judy’ and says she couldn’t go through with the movie without it.”
Zellweger, 49, is currently filming the flick, simply titled Judy. The film is set in 1968 in London, with Garland performing in a sell-out run at the Talk of the Town.
The insider says the Chicago star is well aware what a sensitive subject Garland, even in death, remains, and she “wants to play it right” by staying in contact with the Wizard of Oz stars’ eldest daughter.

“They talk for hours about Judy,” the insider admitted. “Liza is giving her lots of pointers and feedback.”
The movie is due out in 2019, and already is creating award buzz, thanks to Zellweger’s uncanny resemblance to Garland in full makeup and costume.
“Everyone kind of expected Liza to explode after this casting but she sees Renee has the strength and frailty to play Judy,” the insider confirmed.
