The Happenings: Three things to do in Vancouver on Thursday, May 17

Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Thursday, May 17.

Stars on Ice

If you feel like seeing a winning team on the ice at Rogers Arena for once, your best bet is at Stars On Ice, which presents Olympic champion ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, among others in a star-studded lineup. You’ll also see Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford, Patrick Chan and Gabrielle Daleman, if Canadian darlings Virtue and Moir aren’t enough for you.

Where: Rogers Arena, 800 Griffiths Way, Vancouver
When: 7 p.m.
Cost: $25

Expressions Theatre Festival: Outside In

Arts Umbrella presents the Expressions Theatre Festival, an annual celebration of Vancouver’s up-and-coming theatrical talent. This year’s festival features a handful of familiar shows, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!, as well as original new work Outside In, which highlights such topical themes as self-image, family dynamics and gender roles. Expressions runs for the next ten days, but as with all theatre festivals, it’s a whole lot easier to get tickets to the earliest shows, plus it makes the cast feel good when those shows are well-attended. So go tomorrow, when you can see either Outside In or The Phoenician Women. I’ll recommend Outside In, because new works are always fun.

Where: Waterfront Theatre, 1412 Cartwright St., Granville Island, Vancouver
When: 7 p.m.
Cost: $15

Crowville Cabaret

I’m a sucker for variety shows — I think because I love variety. So I absolutely must recommend Crowville Cabaret, a new monthly cabaret show featuring stand up comedy, dance, improv, live music, and other shenanigans. This month features stand-up comedy by Sarah Stupar and Alannah Brittany, improv by Charm Offensive, storytelling by Allison Melech, and music by Laura Reznek.

Where: Lana Lou’s, 362 Powell St., Vancouver
When: 8 p.m.
Cost: $10
