California’s top beaches

We all have favorite beaches, but it’s always fun to get an outsider’s take on which California beaches are the most sublime — especially when the list includes some lesser-known gems.

Most lists of this type feature the same destinations time after time. Coronado beach, near San Diego, is always a popular choice, for example, with its soft white sand and gentle waves set against the backdrop of the spectacular Del Coronado Hotel. Santa Barbara’s Hendry’s Beach is another one — and a favorite of ours, too. Big Sur’s rugged coastline and Carmel’s golden sand also feature prominently on “best beach” lists.

So it’s especially fun to see a recent list penned by Kim Robertson, from the Luxury Travel Blog. Robertson’s SoCal-centric picks include a few surprises, including the south-facing Corona Del Mar State Beach — described as “slightly off the beaten track” with a surfside eatery run by a “Top Chef” alum — as well as family-friendly Pismo Beach and the OC’s Laguna Beach.
