Jill Duggar waited weeks before sharing a first photo of her youngest son in July 2017 – and now fans know why. Former Counting On star Derick Dillard shared a photo of Samuel hooked up to wires at the time of his birth.

Dillard posted a series of photos in honor of his mother’s birthday. In one of the photos, Samuel could be seen with tubes coming out of his nose.

“That is a tube to suction fluid out of the lungs,” a fan suspected. “When babies are born by C-section the fluid does not get pushed out by contractions. It is normal to have to get this out, not a complication. Happened with both my C-section babies.”

Another wrote, “Omg poor Samuel, feeding tube and oxygen. Don’t think he was as healthy at birth as you said originally.”

When Duggar gave birth July 8, she revealed that she underwent a C-section.

“After 40 hours of labor, he was delivered via C-section at the hospital,” the family released in a statement. “Thank you for your continues prayers and support!”

At the time, fans suspected there were complications at the time of his birth, as she waited until July 25 to share a photo of her second son.

Duggar was in labor for 70 hours with her first son Israel, 2.

“His birth didn’t go as expected,” she told People.

She tested positive for strep B and began taking antibiotics via an IV. Because the baby was in a breech position and had irregular heart rates, she underwent a C-section.
