Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Friday, Dec. 8.
B.C.-born music legend Diana Krall visits the Queen Elizabeth Theatre as she tours in support of her new album, Turn Up the Quiet. It’s a perfect title for a Diana Krall album, suggesting exactly what she’s great at: intimate performances that somehow feel bigger than they are. Plus she’s great at Christmas songs, and one imagines, since it’s December, that her setlist will include at least one. So long as it isn’t Wonderful Christmastime, the worst Christmas song ever, it’ll probably be a real treat.
Where: Queen Elizabeth Theatre, 630 Hamilton St., Vancouver
When: 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $44 – $149
The Room at The Rio
Have you seen The Room? Tommy Wiseau’s absurd, off-kilter melodrama is such a disaster that it’s famous for it — these days, The Room is a cult classic film, and will be a staple of the midnight indie cinema scene for years to come. That’s the way to see it, too. Why watch it alone at home when you could be scoffing alongside a theatre full of ironic Room-lovers? With James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, a film about the film, now in theatres, it’s the perfect time to screen The Room, and that’s what the Rio will doing Friday night. Get there. You’ll never hear the phrase “Hi, Mark” the same way again.
Where: The Rio Theatre, 1660 East Broadway, Vancouver
When: 11:45 p.m.
Fringe Cabaret: A Very Merry Fringemas
I love a good cabaret. I think it’s because I had ADD. Any concert that cycles through performances like I cycle through thoughts is perfectly on my wavelength, so expect me to recommend almost every cabaret that Vancouver has to offer. The Fringe Cabaret, created by Fringe alumni, is a good one, with a mix of sketch, storytelling, dance, burlesque, clown, and more, and different artists and themes at every performance. With Christmas just around the corner, the theme of this edition of the Fringe Cabaret is: Christmas. Some of the artists featured at A Very Merry Fringemas: Jeff Leard (The Jupiter Rebellion), Sydney Hayduk (Village Ax), Mika Laulainen (Wild/Society), and Alex Gullason & Carly Pokoradi (The Canada Show).
Where: Studio 1398 (Granville Island), 1398 Cartwright St., Vancouver
When: 8 p.m.
