Arnaud Valade shares Christmas treats in new Oliver cafe

If you pop into Arnaud Valade’s new cafe in Oliver, you may be bowled over — in a good way — by the smell of gingerbread. Now, and throughout the Christmas season, the popular market stall operator is going flat out, making special holiday boxes of cookies, squares and biscotti for Christmas, in addition to producing croissants to keep customers happy, as usual, at the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market.

Arno’s Fine French Pastry is located at 10038 116 street (780-760-0717) and is open six days a week, Tuesday to Sunday. Check its Facebook page for exact details on opening hours.

The cafe, which has 20 seats indoors and about the same number outside in the summer, not only offers coffee and tea, plus pastries, cookies and other sweets, it also serves light lunches, including sandwiches, quiche, salads and a fresh daily soup (including French onion soup au gratin). Arnaud and his whole family, including his wife Veronique, and his sons, Theo and Max, work in the business, either at the cafe or at the market stall.

The cafe also sells jam from The Jam Lady, and honey from Coal Lake Honey, plus that market favourite, the South Island Pie Co., which sells New Zealand-style savoury pies. And miracle of miracles in Edmonton’s downtown, there is reserved parking (four stalls on the south side of the building).
