4 Bay Area chefs will compete on next ‘Top Chef’

A record four Bay Area chefs — two from Oakland, two from San Francisco — will compete on the upcoming season of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef.”

Denver is the locale for this 15th season of the show, which will premiere Dec. 7. Three contestants are from Southern California, giving the state seven contenders out of 15.

The local chefs to watch (and root for) are:

Tanya Holland, of Oakland, is already a familiar name and face to Bay Area foodies, thanks to her television work (“Melting Pot”), her cookbook (“Brown Sugar Kitchen Cookbook”), her speaking engagements — and her West Oakland soul food restaurant, “Brown Sugar Kitchen,” which has just earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand. She’s in the process of expanding her soul food concept to San Francisco and Uptown Oakland. What local folks may not know is that she’s also a classically trained chef who spent years cooking in France and on the East Coast.

Tu David Phu, of Oakland, runs a pop-up series called “AN: A Vietnamese Dining Experience,” but his culinary roots go back to 1895, when the family’s Hung Thanh fish sauce company was founded. His Michelin-rich résumé includes stints at Chez Panisse, Quince, Acquerello, Daniel Boulud, Breslin, Gotham Bar & Grill and Gramercy Tavern. He launched the pop-up dinners after serving as executive chef at Gather in Berkeley.

Rogelio Garcia, of San Franciso, is the executive chef for Traci Des Jardin’s The Commissary at the Presidio, where the focus is Spanish/California cuisine. His résumé is heavy on Wine Country experience and Michelin kitchens: He worked at Thomas Keller’s French Laundry, Douglas Keane’s Cyrus, Redd, Hurley’s and Calistoga Ranch before becoming executive chef at Angèle in Napa. He’s a self-taught chef whose first job was as a dishwasher in Yountville.
