The Happenings: Three things to do in Vancouver on Thursday, August 17

Looking for something to do in Metro Vancouver? Here are three suggestions for Thursday, August 17.

ECLIPSE: Total Alignment

There’s a total solar eclipse coming, which is very cool and exciting. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about our solar system, and why it is that, occasionally, the sun disappears. This event includes a performance show in the Planetarium Star theatre, plus interactive multi- and mixed media art installations, attended by the artists and scientists behind them. You’ll get a scientific narration about the August 21 solar eclipse, you’ll see a dance piece that plays with alignment, light, and shadow, and most importantly, you’ll get alcohol. Sounds like a very fun night out.

Where: H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, 1100 Chestnut Street, Vancouver
When: 6:30 p.m.
Cost: $25 – $30

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: 40th Anniversary Tour

The legendary rocker brings his band to Rogers Arena to celebrate a long and storied career. The Heartbreakers got together in 1976, which technically means Petty, guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboardist Benmont Tench, bassist Ron Blair, rhythm guitarist Scott Thurston and drummer Steve Ferrone are actually in their 41st year as a collective, but we won’t hold it against them, and we definitely won’t be telling them not to come around here no more.

If you got that reference, it means you’re a Tom Petty fan, and you should probably be at this concert. The Lumineers will also be there as the opener, and if you remember who the Lumineers even are anymore, you should probably be at this concert. Tickets are still available.

Where: Rogers Arena, 800 Griffiths Way, Vancouver
When: 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $49.50 and up

Oak + Fort Warehouse Sale

I wouldn’t normally push a warehouse sale in this feature, but I like Oak + Fort’s stuff, and I like the way they fit. If you’re an undertall, broad-shouldered, keg-waisted individual like myself, their slimming designs are a great way to deceive people into thinking you’re actually tall and thin. So you’d best believe I’ll be lining up to see what’s on offer at their warehouse sale, with its 80% markdowns. Affordable, fashionable clothing is my jam. (Also, I secretly love warehouse sales.)

Where: Vancouver Convention Centre East, 999 Canada Place, Vancouver
When: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Cost: Free to enter, but then you’re probably gonna buy some clothes.
